Quick ruminations on pattern shopping

15 Oct

The hardest part about pattern shopping is ignoring the fabric choices. It’s seriously hard for me to look objectively at the shape of a garment without getting distracted by the awful fabric the designer picked because it was laying around under the worktable.

Does anyone else have this problem, or am I the only one with little-to-no ability to visualize a garment in a different fabric?

I have the reverse problem — I can visualize like crazy, and stand there frozen with a store full of possibilities. Paralysis for a while, until I get a filter going.

I will say that looking back for suggested fabrics is a good guideline for the type of fabric — do you need one that’s stretchy and supple like a knit, or will it work with a plaid or border pattern?

Oh yeah, absolutely. Part of my problem is I get distracted by all things purple, no matter how ugly or unsuited the actual pattern.
